A disabled English boy forms an unlikely friendship with an 11 year old Saladin.
Crispin follows his Lord to The Holy Land in the Second Crusade as the European soldiers try to regain ground lost to the Muslims after the fall of Edessa. He saves the life of a very grateful Eleanor of Aquitaine who was accompanying her husband, King Louis V11 of France.
After an ill-advised Crusader attack on Damascus which ended in their defeat, Crispin is wounded and captured by the Muslims and thrown into a dingy prison cell.
