Doctors at War

My maternal grandparents were the inspiration for this book. They were both doctors and surgeons: She was trained in Edinburgh, where “lady doctors” were despised and mistrusted, and the conditions were tough. He was trained in Dublin. Both of them were opinionated and passionate about their calling, and an inevitable clash of personalities ensued.

They fought their way through Malta and Salonica, rarely agreeing on anything, and after the War, bought not one but 2 doctors practices in South London. They worked through the Blitz, tending to the wounded in bombed out houses, until ill-health overcame him and he sadly died at the end of the War. She sold the practices and retired to the south coast, living well into her eighties.
