The Rivers of Eden

I am closer to publishing my latest book The Rivers of Eden. This is an updated and improved version of my earlier book From Eden To Babylon, with an additional chapter.

I am expecting the edited version next week, when Alison Jack has weaved her magic. The first draft of the cover design, by Jason Conway, is also expected next week. My target for publishing is the end of June 2026, but experience tells me that the huge volume of work required often pushes that date forward.

I am so looking forward to publishing and I have already received some reviews, including this one from author, John Lynch, which of course I am very thankful for, as well as being delighted with its brilliance and power.

A gripping, unflinching work of historical fiction, this novel throws us straight into the brutal reality of war and the enduring truth of “lions led by donkeys”. From its unforgettable opening when Herbert discovers his grievously wounded friend Eddie among the dying on a barge the story establishes urgent personal stakes and never loosens its hold. Vivid, authentic detail brings military life in India, the Mesopotamian campaign and the Boer War sharply to life, creating a powerful sense of time and place. The closing stretch at the Siege of Kut is outstanding: tense, tragic and emotionally devastating, with the immediacy of lived experience. At its heart is a moving, hard-won bond between Herbert and Eddie, carried by sharply drawn, convincingly distinct characters. Clean, confident prose free of filler and cliché keeps the pace taut and the impact lasting.
